Capital One

“The Capital One export is refused”

Capital One offers several download options and has changed both its platform and its account identifiers over the years. Most import failures trace back to one of those two facts rather than to anything wrong with the transactions.

Symptoms

  • A download is refused as an invalid or unsupported file
  • The import offers to create a new account instead of using yours
  • The CSV imports with the wrong columns mapped

What actually causes it

Cause 1

Identifiers changed after a platform migration

Account identifiers changed for many customers during platform consolidation. Software matching on the old value treats the file as belonging to an account it has never seen and offers to create one.

Cause 2

The wrong download variant

Options named after software products carry different identifiers and structures. Choosing the one that does not match your program produces a rejection that says nothing about which to pick instead.

Cause 3

A CSV with balance and category columns

The spreadsheet export carries more columns than strict importers accept, and mapping the balance instead of the amount imports the account total as a transaction.

How to fix it

  1. Drop the file into the fixer below: it identifies the real format from the content and reports any structural defects.
  2. Compare the account identifier in the file against what your software stored; a mismatch is what triggers the new-account offer.
  3. Reconnect the account so the current identifier is recorded, rather than importing into a duplicate.
  4. For CSV, keep only date, description and amount, and check you kept the amount rather than the balance.

Skip the manual edit — fix it automatically

The fixer reads the content rather than the file extension, so it tells you what Capital One actually gave you regardless of the label. Free, no signup, no upload.
