“The file you selected is not a valid Web Connect file”

QuickBooks is the strictest OFX importer in common use. When a .qbo file is rejected with "QuickBooks was unable to import this file" or "The file you selected is not a valid Web Connect file", the file violates one of the extra rules QuickBooks layers on top of standard OFX.

Symptoms

  • Banking → Bank Feeds → Import Web Connect File fails with a generic "unable to import" message
  • A .qbo file downloaded from your bank is refused, while the same bank's CSV opens fine in Excel
  • A file produced by a third-party converter is refused even though it "looks like" a QBO file

What actually causes it

Cause 1

Structural OFX defects

The same defects that trigger Quicken's OL-221-A — unescaped ampersands, malformed dates, missing FITIDs, a BOM before the header, or a truncated file — also make QuickBooks refuse the import.

Cause 2

Missing or unrecognized <INTU.BID>

A genuine QBO file carries an <INTU.BID> tag with an identifier Intuit issued to your bank. Files without it — typically produced by converters rather than banks — are refused. There is no legitimate way for a third-party tool to add a valid identifier; it belongs to the bank's Web Connect license.

Cause 3

Wrong file for the wrong product

A .qfx file (Quicken) is not a .qbo file (QuickBooks). Some banks label the download ambiguously as "Quicken/QuickBooks", and picking the wrong variant produces exactly this error.

How to fix it

  1. Drop the .qbo file into the fixer below (analyzed locally — never uploaded) and repair any structural findings.
  2. If the fixer reports "No <INTU.BID> tag", the file cannot be made importable as QBO by any tool — download the QBO variant from your bank's export page, or import the transactions via CSV instead.
  3. Retry the import with Banking → Bank Feeds → Import Web Connect File.
  4. If your bank simply does not offer QBO, CSV import (QuickBooks Online) is the supported alternative.
